How to install apps with Snap on Linux

Snaps install from the Snap Store and work across Linux distributions. Set it up once, then install anything with a single command.

A snap is a self-contained Linux app that installs from the Snap Store and runs on most distributions without hunting for the right package. Each app on this site shows its exact install command.

Check you have snapd

Ubuntu and several others include snap already. Otherwise install snapd with your package manager:

sudo apt install snapd # Debian/Ubuntu
# sudo dnf install snapd # Fedora (then: sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap)

Install and manage apps

  • sudo snap install vlc — install an app
  • sudo snap refresh — update everything
  • sudo snap remove vlc — remove it
  • snap list — see what's installed

Some apps need extra access and are installed with --classic (the Snap Store page tells you when). Prefer a graphical store? The Snap Store app itself installs with: sudo snap install snap-store.
